Back in the '70's and early '80's there was a type of Rock that was best described as long form story telling with extended musical passages.

In the radio biz we referred to this type of Rock as Progressive Rock or Prog Rock.  

We also referred to the songs as "bathroom" or "smoke" break songs.

Because usually these songs would be a minimum length of at least 6 minutes and sometimes up to 20 minutes.

So it would give a Radio DJ ample time to take a refreshing bathroom break or a relaxing smoke break without having to cue up another record.

Yes...this was when DJ's actually played records...remember those?
