Everyone knows where they were. Easy for me. I was in the studio doing the "Kenn and Barbie" show. Just another fun morning. Until the news of a "plane" hitting the World Trade Center. First thought..."pilot must have been drunk". Then another report of another report. Next thought..."this isn't a coincidence, we're under attack." So many detail were sketchy as we were trying to piece together the story to tell on the air. We eventually dropped all programming and carried NBC News all day for three days.
When we went back on the air, we were all still in shock. Planes still weren't flying. People still didn't know where their loved ones were. We all knew we had to do something, just didn't know what. I played the Star Spangled Banner on the air. Every day. Weeks later, we all got together at the Marketplace for a concert with local musicians and just hung out together under a big flag, feeling, well...American. I've never felt anything like it since.
What was meant to tear us apart. Brought us together. Let's all take at least once step back to that spot today. God Bless America. And God Bless the first responders, our military and their families.
